Climate change represents one of the most significant challenges facing contemporary agriculture, affecting crop productivity, natural resources, and the stability of food systems worldwide. At the same time, agricultural activities are important sources of greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for sustainable transformation pathways. Agroecology has increasingly emerged as an integrated approach that applies ecological principles to agricultural systems while promoting environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and resource efficiency. This paper provides a conceptual analysis of the role of agroecology in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Through a synthesis of recent scientific literature, the study examines how agroecological practices contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and improved soil and water management. Furthermore, the paper explores the integration of agroecological principles within current European agricultural and climate policies. The originality of the study lies in its integrated assessment of agroecology as a strategic framework capable of simultaneously supporting climate change mitigation, adaptation, and long-term agricultural sustainability, with particular relevance for the European and Romanian agricultural context. The analysis demonstrates that the incorporation of agroecological principles into climate strategies can strengthen ecosystem services, enhance the resilience of farming systems, and contribute to long-term food security and sustainable rural development.
