e criteria considered by the various successive descriptions of the taxa of C. (Eucarabus) obsoletus Strum 1815 were examined to assess their suitability for identification. Among those appear: the characteristics of the elytra sculpture, the size of the pronotum and the shape of the rear wings, indices of relative size limited subjective evaluation. The elytra sculpture is an important criterion of distinction (dichotomy table proposed); few ratios of size or pronotale value being secondarily added.
